How did the Gold Rush create a new model of the American Dream?
Alfred Dolten
Alfred Doten’s lifestyle changed dramatically during his time in California. In California he drank a lot with the 49ers ,worked on Sundays, and had a small shop. Back in Pymouth he did not work on Sundays and did not have a small shop.

His travel was rough. He worked long hours mining gold and his relationship with his family declined. He would send his wife letters about California and how he was going to find lots of gold. His wife sent him letters that said how much she wanted him to come home. Doten ignored his wife’s request and stayed there.
Hiram Pierce
Like Dolten. he also went to the west in gold but he was very different from Alfred Dolten. He kept a journal and wrote about San Francisco. He was in a lot of debt and could not pay it off and he did not die alone.

His travels were not rough like Alfred’s was. He took a train. Like Doten, his relationship with his family fell. He was always having to get money from his wife back home to pay off the debt and by the time he went home his children did not remember him.
Race
Race changed by separating foreigners and kicking them off. Americans believed that foreigners had no right to mine in America. Because of this foreigners refused to leave and stood up to the Americans.
Women
Women had a lot more things to do by themselves because most of the men were out in the west. The rich could could do a lot more things because they had more money than everyone else. Others did not become rich and succeed.

The forty niners had many new rights. They had the right to not attend church, drink and not get involved in politics.
This changed the U.S a lot because people had more freedom and less strict rules than before. These men looked like middle class people. They were not super important or rich but they tried to succeed and did not give up even if times were rough.
